党的领导是中国特色社会主义的最本质特征。中国共产党在百年历史进程中对“党的领导”有着不同表述，大致经历四个阶段：新民主主义革命时期强调要把握领导权，明确“党的领导”是革命成功的关键；社会主义革命和建设时期指出，“领导我们事业的核心力量是中国共产党”；改革开放和社会主义现代化建设新时期要求“坚持党的领导，必须改善党的领导”；中国特色社会主义新时代则提出坚持党的全面领导，即坚持党对一切工作的统领。就意义形塑而言，不同表述有着特定的时代背景，蕴含着丰富的内涵和意义，引领着各个历史时期的中心工作和历史使命的完成。
