The Sentinel-1 SAR images can be obtained free of charge from the Copernicus Open Access Hub. () or the Alaska Satellite Facility Vertex interface. ( https://search.asf.alaska.edu/ ). The Envisat ASAR images can be downloaded from the EOLI-SA user interface by the European Space Agency (ESA). ( https://earth.esa.int/eogateway/ ). The MODIS images can be downloaded from the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) Worldview Snapshots application ( https://worldview.earthdata.nasa.gov/ ). The ALOS-2 PALSAR-2 images were supported by the Japan Aerospace Exploration Agency (JAXA) 6th Research Announcement, PI number 3332. N-ICE2015 buoy data supported by the Norwegian Polar Institute’s Centre for Ice, Climate and Ecosystems (ICE) through the N-ICE project ( https://www.npolar.no/en/projects/n-ice2015/ ). The ITP buoy data were collected and made available by the Ice-Tethered Profiler Program based at the Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution ( http://www.whoi.edu/itp ). The OSI-SAF SIC products be obtained free of charge from the Ocean and Sea Ice Satellite Application Facility ( https://osi-saf.eumetsat.int/products/osi-401-b ). The Python code to produce the SIM dataset is being refined. We plan to make it public on GitHub in 2023.

This study presents an improved, versatile, and efficient algorithm based on the Oriented FAST and Rotated BRIEF (ORB) combined with the maximum cross-correlation (MCC) (ORB-MCC) for extracting sea ice motion (SIM) vectors. Quadtree ORB (Q-ORB) extracts more uniform feature points than ORB (uniformity is 3 times higher) and eliminates the concentration of ORB-extracted feature points on ice ridges, leads and coastlines, thereby providing excellent initial conditions for MCC calculations.
