Data have been secured on the countercurrent extraction of soybean flakes by trichloroethylene in a laboratory extraction pilot plant having a capacity of about 10 lb. per hour. Feed rates and extraction times departed only slightly from a straight line relationship with the speed of the chain used to move the flakes through the extractor. Over the ranges studied, changes in solvent‐feed ratios had a much greater effect than the extraction time on the amount of oil extracted. Over a practical range of temperatures with the solvent‐feed ratio constant, the residual oil content of the meal showed a straight line relationship with the temperature.

Polyvinylpyrrolidone (PVP) can be conveniently fractionated from water by successive precipitation with acetone, from chloroform with ether, or from ethanol with benzene. The major part (60–70%) of the common PVP has the intrinsic viscosity of 0.12–0.30. The fractions can be liberated from the low molecular components by extraction of the solid polymer with acetone. Precipitability with ammonium sulfate is a very convenient means of characterizing the fractions. The amount of ammonium sulfate needed to produce turbidity decreases with increasing mean molecular weight of the fractions, with the increasing concentration of the polymer, and with increasing temperature. The molar concentration of ammonium sulfate that produces turbidity is a linear function of the logarithm of the mean molecular weight of the fractions. The amount of ammonium sulfate which produces turbidity decreases linearly with increasing temperature.

The data presented by Reeve and Kirkham in Tables 1 and 2 can be analyzed further with statistical methods. First, the question may be raised which of the observed differences between average permeability values as found by the various methods are significant in view of the stated variance and the number of samples. In testing the null hypothesis for the data of Table 1 at the 19:1 level of odds (which is the lowest usually considered), the following result is obtained for each of the ten possible comparisons.
