The effect of time delay on stochastic resonance of the stock prices in finance system was investigated. The time delay is introduced into the Heston model driven by the extrinsic and intrinsic periodic information for stock price. The signal power amplification (SPA) was calculated by numerical simulation. The results indicate that an optimal critical value of delay time maximally enhances the reverse-resonance in the behaviors of SPA as a function of long-run variance of volatility or cross correlation coefficient between noises for both cases of intrinsic and extrinsic periodic information. Moreover, in both cases, being a critical value in the delay time, when the delay time takes value below the critical value, reverse-resonance increases with the delay time increasing, however, when the delay time takes value above the critical value, the reverse-resonance decrease with the delay time increasing. Background: Stress is a feature of the life of nursing students and this had been well studied. However, there are very few instruments to measure stress in nursing students specifically. One such instrument, the Stressors in Nursing Students Scale has been developed in Scotland and applied in studies in Hong Kong and Australia and proved useful alongside other measures of individual differences and psychological distress. Objectives: To translate the Stressors in Nursing Students Scale into Chinese, test it with Chinese nursing students and explore the psychometric structure of stress in this population. Design: Cross-sectional survey using a self-administered questionnaire. Setting: A large teaching hospital in Southwest Mainland China. Participants: Nursing students (n=1090) participated (1000 in the classroom and 90 on clinical placement); 862 from the classroom and 79 from clinical placements returned questionnaires (n=914) representing a return rate of 86.3%. Methods: Principal component analysis and confirmatory factor analysis using structural equation modelling. Results: A four-factor structure was obtained from principal component analysis. This was confirmed (fit indices >0.9 and RMSEA<0.06) using structural equation modelling. The stress-related factors were: Clinical (0.83), Finance (0.81), Confidence (0.82), and Education (0.70). Conclusions: The original structure of the SINS in English was confirmed in this large sample of Chinese nursing students. This will allow cross-cultural studies of stress in nursing students. This study identifies the key antecedent factors for accomplishing the adoption stage of enterprise resource planning (ERP) systems. Five potential antecedent factors of adoption were derived from the literature, including that on innovation theories, and data were obtained from a sample of 217 organizations across Australia. A structural equation modeling (SEM) technique was used to examine the complex relationships between antecedents and the adoption decision. We found that there were three positive drivers of a successful outcome of the ERP adoption stage. Prior findings have shown that system quality is a key enabler for innovation adoption by individuals, and we found that system quality is also an important driver for organizational adoption of ERP. It was also indicated that organizations consider adopting ERP when the market and customer patterns are relatively stable rather than in turbulent environments.

The Barratt Impulsiveness Scale-11 (BIS-11) is an important tool for measuring impulsivity in suicide research. This study aimed to assess psychometric characteristics of Chinese version of BIS-11 in suicides and controls of rural China. Data of 200 pairs of suicide cases and living controls were collected by psychological autopsy method. The Cronbach's alpha coefficients of BIS-11 were 0.936 for suicides, and 0.892 for living controls. Convergent validity analysis demonstrated a significantly positive correlation between the scores of BIS-11 with the scores of Beck Hopelessness Scale and Trait Anxiety Inventory. Confirmatory factor analyses indicated that the BIS-11 structure was basically suitable in rural China. With its high reliability, few items in BIS-11 may need a modification in order to further improve the construct validity of this instrument for suicide research in rural China.

Aims: To investigate trends in the evaluation of clinical competence in nursing students and newly qualified nurses over the last 10 years. Design: A literature review following PRISMA guidelines. Methods: The following databases were searched: Cochrane, Medline and CINAHL using the terms competenc*, nurs* and assess*, evaluat*. measure*, from January 2001-March 2010. Strict inclusion and exclusion criteria were applied. Results: Twenty three papers were included and these mainly considered the following topics: instrument development and testing: approaches to testing competence: assessment and related factors. A holistic concept of competence is gaining popularity, and consensus around definitions is emerging. Some methods and instruments to measure competence are under systematic development and testing for reliability and validity with large samples and rigorous statistical method. Wider national and international cooperation is evident in competence-based assessment. Conclusions: Competence-based education is evident, but this does not mean that issues related to competence definition have been resolved. Larger and more international cooperation is required to reach common agreement and validity in competence-based education and assessment. (C) 2011 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

In December 2007 Newbattle Abbey College, Scotland’s only Adult Residential College, celebrated its seventieth anniversary. Its survival during this relatively short span has always been contingent. Its greatest crisis occurred in 1987, when the Scottish Office announced its intention to withdraw public funding from the college. This event reveals one of the problems to have dogged Newbattle from its beginning: its relative isolation from mainstream Scottish education. Its unusual size, structure and function all made it an important addition to mainstream education provision, but they also historically caused Newbattle to be both overlooked and underfunded. Yet the campaign to save Newbattle also reveals the extent to which the ideals associated with the college continued to resonate with important sections of Scottish society in the 1980s. This paper examines the debates concerning the role of residential non‐vocational education in Scotland from the 1960s to the ‘Save Newbattle’ Campaign of 1987–1989.

This article examines the extent to which the professional orientation of Australian military personnel has shifted since September 2001. Four dimensions of professional orientation are identified, through analysis of ratings of reasons for serving in surveys conducted across the period 1996 through 2006. Duty/Professionalism represented Moskos's institutional orientation and Pay/Conditions, Development/Enhancement, and Adventure/Variety represented occupational orientation. The professional orientation of Other Ranks is now more pragmatic and more professional, in the sense that Pay/ Conditions and Duty/Professionalism motives are now more important as reasons for serving. Officers, on the other hand, have become less pragmatic and more professional, with Duty/Professionalism motives now dominant in professional orientation and Pay/ Conditions motives now much less important. Development/Enhancement and Adventure/ Variety are now less important for all categories. The article argues that these shifts are due to recent changes to Australia's strategic, social, and economic circumstances and notes the practical and scholarly implications of the results.

In this paper we evaluated the distributional effects on actors in the milk market of a hypothetical programme to eradicate bovine viral diarrhoea (BVD) from the Scottish dairy herd. With this in mind, we applied an economic welfare methodology which utilizes data on price, on output quantity, on elasticities of supply and demand and on simulated cost and yield effects of an eradication programme. Our analysis is based on Markov-chain Monte Carlo simulation of BVD spread in the dairy herd. We found that consequent upon the eradication of the disease milk yield per cow increased for all herd sizes in Scotland whereas milk price received by farmers fell. Consequently, milk consumers gained around 11 pound million in discounted economic surplus and producers with infected herds gained around 39 pound million whereas producers with un-infected herds lost around 2 pound million in discounted surplus. On balance, however, the eradication programme generated around 47 pound million in discounted economic gain for Scotland. We found that the results are sensitive to changes in yield gains made by owners of the infected herd. (C) 2008 Published by Elsevier B.V.
