An effective porosity concept has been introduced to account for the effects of tortuosity and thermal dispersion on the individual effective thermal conductivities of the solid and fluid phases in a fluid-saturated porous medium. Using this effective porosity concept, a thermal nonequilibrium model has been proposed to attack locally thermal nonequilibrium problems associated with convection within a fluid-saturated porous medium. Exact solutions are obtained, assuming a plug flow, for the two cases of thermally fully developed convective flows through a channel, namely, the case of isothermal hot and cold walls and the case of constant heat flux walls. These exact solutions for the cases of metal foam and air combination reveal that the local thermal equilibrium assumption may hold for the case of isothermal hot and cold walls, but may fail for the case of constant heat flux walls.

A cost-effective better performing silicone waterproofing agent interpenetrating polymer network coating for the protection of concrete has been developed. The working mechanism of the silicone polymer on the concrete was revealed and the effect of the material on the water absorption, chloride diffusion coefficient of concrete was analyzed. The results showed that the deep penetration of silicone material formed a hydrophobic layer and provides an effective protection against water corrosion and chloride ingress. A long-term protection can be guaranteed in case the surface of the concrete is waterproofing.

Rainfall infiltration is currently one of the important factors in studying the soil-slope stability. By using saturated-unsaturated seepage theory, the traditional limit equilibrium method and so on, analyze the water content and the pore-water pressure changes under the rainfall condition, then analyze the influence mechanism of the slope stability. Through the Seep/W and the Slope/W of the GEO-Slope software, do the numerical simulation of the slope stability under the rainfall condition, to seek the distribution of pore-water pressure on the rainfall situation and the influence of the seepage field from various parameters such as rainfall intensity and the soil permeability coefficient, thus to study the slope stability.

A local thermal non-equilibrium model has been considered for the case of thermally fully developed flow within a constant heat flux tube filled with a porous medium. Exact temperature profiles for the fluid and solid phases are found after combining the two individual energy equations and then transforming them into a single ordinary differential equation with respect to the temperature difference between the solid phase and the wall subject to constant heat flux. The exact solutions for the case of metal-foam and air combination reveal that the local thermal equilibrium assumption may fail for the case of constant heat flux wall. The Nusselt number is presented as a function of the Peclet number, which shows a significant increase due to both high stagnant thermal conductivity and thermal dispersion resulting from the presence of the metal-foam.
