摘要:
It has been shown that a whistle, like an organ pipe, consists essentially of two components, (1) a jet‐edge (JE) system and (2) a resonator, or cavity. Several whistles, with different rectangular cross‐section dimensions, have been constructed. The JE system of each whistle has been duplicated separately so that the operation of each whistle could be compared with the operation of the corresponding independent JE system. Some properties of JE systems alone were discussed at a previous meeting. This paper is concerned with whistles themselves, and particularly with the numerous modes of self‐oscillation that may arise when a whistle is blown. The discussion is restricted to those modes for which the JE system of the whistle is believed to be operating in Stage I. The modes of whistle self‐oscillation are closely related to the normal modes of vibration of the air in the whistle cavity. These latter may be determined approximately by considering the cavity to be a rectangular room with five rigid walls and one “soft” wall of small acoustic impedance. In general, a given mode, say N, of whistle operation will be excited when the frequency of the edge tone, to which the JE system by itself would give rise, is approximately equal to the characteristic frequency fN, of the calculated cavity mode N. This has been found to be true for tangential as well as axial cavity modes. When operation is in mode N, the whistle frequency may lie anywhere in a small frequency interval whose upper limit is fN.

A simple non-irritating, large-lumen tube suitable for prolonged feeding purposes is described and illustrated. The mercury weighted segment allows the tube to be passed without difficulty into the stomach or upper small bowel and prevents obstruction of the lumen due to twisting. The tube has been used successfully for prolonged periods in the supplementary feeding of malnourished patients. It has also been used to by-pass a poorly functioning stomach following vagotomy. It has been passed successfully through a gastroenterostomy that functioned poorly in the early postoperative period. It has also been passed into the distal jejunal loop at the time of gastroenterostomy. The weighted end of the tube can be picked up in the stomach and directed into the jejunum for six to eight inches with long forceps. Jejunal feedings are thus possible in the event of a malfunctioning stoma. A Levine tube for gastric suction may be passed through the same nostril as the latex tube but the latter should be passed first. It is advisable that the latex tube be passed a half hour or so prior to operation or with the patient sitting up, in the event that there is a delay in passage of the mercury weighted segment through the esophagus. Irritation of the nose or throat has not resulted from the use of this tube. Although the tubing lies reasonably taut against the side of the nose, a continuous drag of the tubing due to peristaltic activity has not been observed, apparently due to the small bulk of the mercury-containing segment and the elasticity of the latex rubber.
